Descrizione
The Fall of Malacca in occurred when the Viceroy of Portuguese India Afonso de Albuquerque conquered the city of Malacca in 1511.
The port city of Malacca, capital of Malacca Sultanate controlled the narrow, strategic Strait of Malacca, through which all seagoing trade between Ming China, Vijayanagara India, Swahili Africa, Mamluk Egypt & Safavid Persia was concentrated. The capture of Malacca was the result of a plan by King Manuel I of Portugal, who since 1505 had intended to beat the Castilians to dominate Spice & Silk Route to the Far-East, and Albuquerque's own project of establishing firm foundations for Portuguese hegemony in Indian Ocean, alongside Hormuz, Goa, and Aden, to ultimately control trade and thwart existing Arab, Persian, Indian, Malay, Javanese & Chinese shipping.
After conquering Hormuz and additionaly conquering Goa in Gujarat, Portuguese move to Malacca, when the sultanate was in political turmoil due to power struggle between unpopular rule of Sultan Mahmud Shah and its corrupt Bendahara (Prime Minister) Tun Mutahir. The power struggle in the internal court of the sultanate best described in Hikayat Hang Tuah.
The wealthy Malacca Sultanate employs various mercenaries like Lusung (Luzones) warriors, Javanese Cannoneers and Gujarati engineers.
