The Battle of Talas (Chinese: 怛羅斯戰役; Arabic: معركة نهر طلاس) was an armed confrontation between the Abbasid Caliphate along with the Tibetan Empire against the Tang Empire in 751 CE. In July of that year, the Tang and Abbasid armies clashed at the Talas River near present day Taraz over control of the Central Asia part of the lucrative Silk Road. The Tang army under General Gao Xianzhi of Goguryeo was defeated by the Abbasid army under Governor Ziyad ibn Salih and Karluk mercenaries.
