If you are looking to ditch Windows and turn your gaming rig into a couch friendly console experience, you need to double check your system specs before making the leap. SteamOS has a very specific set of hardware requirements that could stop your installation in its tracks if your components do not line up.
First up, your graphics card is the biggest deciding factor. Official support is strictly locked to AMD GPUs right now, meaning if you are running an NVIDIA card, drivers and performance are simply not ready for a smooth desktop experience. Beyond graphics, you will need a 64-bit processor, at least 8GB of system memory, and UEFI boot support enabled in your BIOS.
You also need an NVMe SSD for your primary boot drive, as legacy SATA setups can cause headaches during the setup process. If your hardware meets the checklist, installing Valve operating system gives you a fast, bloatware free gaming setup. Is your system ready to run SteamOS, or are you stuck waiting for NVIDIA driver support?
