Bed Bugs

Description

When I was a child, my grandfather said to me:
Good night. Sleep tight.
Don't let the bed bugs bite.

I'd thought he was joking, like when he said
eating black pepper would put hair on my chest.
Or when he said the reason I ate a lot,
was because I had a hollow leg.
I didn't think bed bugs were real.

Many years later, I got a job cleaning hotel rooms.
One day I had to put a room back together.
The bedding had been removed
and the mattresses were on their sides.
I asked what had happened.

The head of housekeeping said to me,
"We had visitors."
I found out the visitors had been bed bugs!

Many years after that,
a friend posted a picture
of a house centipede.

I shared the pic,
and some people said, "Ew."
That was not nice.

I knew that was not okay, saying "ew"
solely based on what someone looks like.
So, I decided to make a song.

While researching house centipedes for my song,
I found out these creatures don't bother humans
at all.

In fact, they help humans.
House centipedes eat bed bugs!

If my grandpa were still alive,
I'd love to reminisce.

And let him know I always
remembered when he said to me:
Good night. Sleep tight.
Don't let the bed bugs bite.
