AE Live 25.4 - From Gonna to LOL: Teaching Informal American English for Speech and Text

American English Stream 11 days ago

Description

Presenter: Christopher Colwell

Informal American English often differs significantly from the more formal language found in textbooks, yet it appears frequently in media and everyday communication. Learners may struggle to understand, pronounce, and appropriately use informal language, including reduced forms, regional expressions, and digital abbreviations.

This session will share scaffolded, ready-to-use activities that develop understanding of the form, meaning, and use of informal American English. Together, we’ll explore activities that help learners build skills in interpreting authentic materials, improving pronunciation fluency, and strengthening pragmatic awareness by comparing formal and informal usage across situations. By the end of the webinar, participants will have a set of low-prep, adaptable strategies to help learners better understand and use informal American English in both speech and text.
