Description
Vintage horror paperbacks were completely unhinged, and today I'm diving into some of the wildest, weirdest, and most unforgettable horror book covers in my collection.
This isn't a list of the best horror novels ever written, and you won't find household names like Stephen King or Dean Koontz here. Instead, we're celebrating the rare, obscure, and often bizarre horror paperbacks that filled bookstore spinner racks throughout the '70s, '80s, and '90s. These are the books published by Zebra, Pinnacle, Tor, Leisure, Pocket Books, Popular Library, and countless UK horror imprints that weren't afraid to put grisly imagery, demonic children, killer bugs, flesh-eating monsters, and other nightmarish horrors right on the cover.
In this episode, we'll take a look at outrageous cover art from authors like William W. Johnstone, Guy N. Smith, Stephen Gresham, Stephen R. George, John Christopher, Richard Laymon, and forgotten masters of vintage horror fiction. From creepy kids and disturbing body horror to bizarre creatures and animal attack novels, these books proudly advertised exactly what kind of madness readers were getting into.
Many of these paperbacks step straight out of the world of Grady Hendrix's Paperbacks from Hell, the definitive guide to the horror paperback boom. In fact, one of the books featured in this video is The Little People by John Christopher, whose bonkers cover helped inspire Hendrix to write Paperbacks from Hell in the first place.
If you're a fan of vintage horror books, pulp paperbacks, or even horror VHS collecting and video store nostalgia, you'll find plenty to love with these vintage horror books. These covers capture the same energy that once screamed at horror fans from video store shelves and drive-in movie posters.
Welcome to Library Macabre, where we never judge a book by its cover... unless the cover is completely insane!

► ABOUT
Hi creeps! My name is Cameron Chaney. I’m a horror author (check out my books above!) and the host of Library Macabre, a horror-focused BookTube channel dedicated to horror book reviews, vintage horror paperbacks, and all things spooky. On this channel, I talk about everything from classic and retro horror books (including 70s, 80s, and 90s horror paperbacks) to modern horror, indie horror, and mainstream horror releases. If you love creepy reads, obscure horror novels, and nostalgic book content, you’re in the right place.
Not strictly a horror fan? No worries! I also feature other genres, book hauls, and nostalgic reads from time to time. I’m a huge fan of book collecting, especially rare and out-of-print horror paperbacks. You’ll also find the occasional horror movie review with my Cult Movie Macabre series, Halloween content, book and movie unboxings, and anything else that fits those cozy, eerie vibes. If it’s spooky, nostalgic, or bookish… I’m here for it. :-)
