There are only four oceans and well over 50 bodies of water commonly known as “seas”. So what the heck is up with the commonly referenced “seven seas”, which ones are they? Who chose them? When? And, most importantly: why? Well, me hearties: weigh anchor and climb the mizzen mast as we set sail on a journey to give you the answer, so we all can feel smugly superior to lesser mortals who use the term seven seas when singing such songs as Sweet Dreams by the Eurythmics, but actually have no clue what they are talking about. And in the Bonus Facts later, we’re going to look at how on earth the oceans of the world don’t continue to get saltier and saltier, and that time the United States tried to stop hurricanes, the hilarity that ensued, and why that was a monumentally stupid idea even if we’d succeeded.
