Synopsis:
Woodpeckers are master architects of the forest. By chiselling cavities into tree trunks, they create nesting and shelter spaces that become vital homes for a wide variety of other animals, including birds, squirrels and owls.
But life in the forest’s “housing market” is competitive. Many species compete for the limited number of safe nesting holes, turning woodpecker cavities into some of the most valuable real estate in the woodland ecosystem.
The film follows the lives of several woodpecker species, revealing their unique behaviours—from powerful drumming displays used to attract mates to their ingenious ability to locate insects hidden deep inside tree bark. It also explores how these birds increasingly interact with human environments, sometimes drilling into insulated house facades in search of the perfect resonance.
