Remember the most famous lion coalition in Kruger National Park?
Casper the White Lion and his three Shishangaan brothers—Footloose, Casanova, and Mfowethu—took control of the Satara Pride in early 2019. For nearly six years, they ruled the pride before being overthrown at the end of 2024 by the two young Ngotso South males from the S90 and their coalition partner, the blonde Nsemani male.
Tragically, even before their fall, the coalition had begun to weaken. Casanova and Mfowethu were diagnosed with bovine tuberculosis, which had a serious impact on their health. After losing dominance, the brothers—along with some older lionesses and their cubs—retreated southeast of Satara Rest Camp to avoid conflict with the younger males who had taken over.
In December 2024, Footloose suffered a broken leg that led to his death shortly afterwards. The last sighting of Casanova came in January 2025. He was in very poor condition and died soon after, also as a result of tuberculosis. Mfowethu was last seen on the 11th of August 2025, frail but still accompanied by the breakaway Satara lionesses and their offspring. Since then, he too has not been seen again.
Casper ventured north, where he briefly associated with the two young Ngotso South males. However, their uneasy alliance quickly turned hostile. On the 13th of August 2025, Casper was attacked by the young males and suffered severe bite wounds above his right eye and around his mouth. The following day, SANParks veterinarians darted him and treated the infected injuries with antibiotics.
On the 31st of August 2025, just two weeks after being treated by veterinarians, Casper was seen again along the S40, west of the place where he had been darted. He looked strong and in good condition and moved with ease. But questions remain—had he truly recovered from his injuries? And what of his brother, Mfowethu—was he still alive? What seems clear is that this moment marks the beginning of the end for the legendary Shishangaan Brothers, a coalition that once ruled the Satara Pride with unmatched strength and unity.
GAME DRIVE ETIQUETTE - RULES (SANParks):
– When you come across a sighting, slowly pull over on the side of the road closest to the animal, but keep a safe distance and turn OFF your engine
– If there are animals in the road, immediately stop at least 20 m from them
– The lane furthest from the sighting should NEVER be blocked, so that others can pass if they want to
– Don’t linger longer than a few minutes at a sighting, so that others can view it too
– Never go off the designated roads
– Never climb out of your vehicle during a drive, or hang out of your car windows or sunroof
– Don’t hoot or blare loud music
– Avoid driving into vegetation, as this could damage the environment or kill small animals
– During night drives, never shine a spotlight directly in animals’ eyes
– Never make noise to get animals to move, stand up or otherwise react for pictures
– Respect the rangers, and always comply with their requests or instructions
