Since the arrival of the two young Ngotso South male lions and their coalition partner, the blonde Nsemani male, the dynamics within the Satara Lion Pride have shifted dramatically. The intruding males entered the territory once ruled by Casper the White Lion and his Shishangaan brothers, causing unrest among the pride.
In response, a group of Satara lionesses broke away from the main pride and fled eastward to protect their cubs from the new threat. These lionesses have been living cautiously, constantly on the move whenever the intruders draw near.
On the 15th of July 2025, they were seen on the S100 alongside Mfowethu Shishangaan—Casper’s last surviving brother—who appeared visibly weak and frail. Then, on the morning of July 16th, 2025, we witnessed a dramatic sight: two Satara lionesses, accompanied by two small cubs and Nkosana—the young son of the Shishangaan brothers—running down the H6 in a desperate attempt to avoid the ever-persistent Ngotso South males and their coalition partner.
This sighting is a powerful reminder of the dangers young lions face during pride takeovers. We hope Nkosana, the last known subadult heir of the Shishangaan legacy, survives to carry on the bloodline of Casper the White Lion.
GAME DRIVE ETIQUETTE - RULES (SANParks):
– When you come across a sighting, slowly pull over on the side of the road closest to the animal, but keep a safe distance and turn OFF your engine
– If there are animals in the road, immediately stop at least 20 m from them
– The lane furthest from the sighting should NEVER be blocked, so that others can pass if they want to
– Don’t linger longer than a few minutes at a sighting so that others can view it too
– Never go off the designated roads
– Never climb out of your vehicle during a drive or hang out of your car windows or sunroof
– Don’t hoot or blare loud music
– Avoid driving into vegetation, as this could damage the environment or kill small animals
– During night drives, never shine a spotlight directly in animals’ eyes
– Never make noise to get animals to move, stand up or otherwise react for pictures
– Respect the rangers, and always comply with their requests or instructions
