I’m always a fan of the EVO series lenses from Viltrox. As I travel a lot. Compact is the key. It’s not even a year since the first EVO 85mm f/2 lens came out, we now have 6x EVO lenses already. And this time, it is even better. Because Viltrox just dropped the AF 26mm f/2.8 EVO Pancake lens.
About 1.5 years ago, Viltrox introduced the AF 28mm f/4.5 pancake lens with AF. And that lens was such a great travel lens. But the main drawback was a fixed aperture of f/4.5. And also there wasn’t a filter thread. So for video shooter, it was tough. But now, we have the 26mm pancake. Yes, the lens is slightly thicker than the 28mm f/4.5. But we do get the aperture ring, manual focus ring and the filter thread (Need to put on the lens hood to use the ND filter). And the best thing is, the 26mm is f/2.8. For me, I’d rather have variable aperture and filter thread than ultra slim.
When you think 26mm is an odd number but it’s actually very similar to a normal 24-70mm lens, because the 24mm wide end isn’t on a 24-70mm sticks out a lot. So putting both 24-70mm and this 26mm pancake lens. They are almost identical.
Overall, I think this is such an awesome travel lens. I think everyone should have this lens in your camera bag. The lens only weighs 130g. When pairing with the Sony ZV-E1 (399g). You can have the lighter full frame set up ever.
