Description
A futuristic electric boat designed to rise above the water could soon change how people travel across Lake Tahoe, offering a new transportation option for commuters, skiers and tourists while potentially reducing traffic on the roads surrounding the lake.
FlyTahoe is moving forward with plans to introduce commercial passenger service using electric hydrofoil vessels, with hopes of launching operations by early 2028. News 4-Fox 11 got an up-close look at the Vessev VS-9 in Tahoe City, a 29-foot electric boat that can carry up to 10 passengers and travel at speeds of nearly 29 miles per hour. It's this style of boat that is expected to be the first in the fleet at FlyTahoe.
How the hydrofoil technology works
Unlike traditional boats that push through the water, the Vessev VS-9 uses underwater wings, called hydrofoils, to lift its hull above the surface as it gains speed. At approximately 17 knots, or 20 mph, the boat rises onto its hydrofoils, dramatically reducing the amount of the vessel that comes into contact with the water. The result is less drag, greater efficiency and a smoother ride, even when the water is choppy.
The vessel can reach speeds of 25 knots, or approximately 29 mph.
