LINDALE, Texas (CBS News/CBS Newspath/WKRC) - An 8-year-old girl died after choking during lunch at her elementary school, and her family is raising questions about the response after surveillance video showed her seeking help.
Adrian Thompson began showing signs of distress in the school cafeteria in April, according to video her family released this week to CBS affiliate KYTX. Her mother, Anna Thompson, said the footage shows Adrian trying to get help before reaching the school nurse’s office.
An investigative report said Adrian approached a woman and gestured toward her mouth before being directed to a trash can. The report said the woman then asked whether Adrian needed to use the bathroom. Adrian left the cafeteria but returned moments later in visible distress, the report said.
Video later shows Adrian running toward the nurse’s office. The footage does not show what happened inside, but a nurse reported performing the Heimlich maneuver, using an anti-choking device and beginning CPR, according to the report.
A 911 call captured someone reporting that a child was choking in the nurse’s office. When surveillance footage resumes, first responders are taking Adrian to an ambulance as chest compressions continue.
Adrian was taken to a hospital and later transferred to a children’s hospital in Fort Worth. She died the next day.
The Texas Rangers investigated the death and classified it as an accident, concluding there was no criminal offense, according to the report.
“If the camera footage that we were shown showed that once Adrian began choking and that they started all helping right away, I would still be devastated that Adrian passed away, but that's not what the camera footage shows,” Anna Thompson said.
She said the family released the video because “people need to know about this.”
