Description
Fatima Joumaa is a filmmaker and photographer from South Lebanon, whose work explores how war is remembered and how mourning shapes collective memory. In this episode of ‘War Witness’, Fatima presents three photographs that highlight the human cost of the war on Lebanon and the dangers of being a journalist.
The first photograph is of a family photograph found among the rubble of a residential building in Talet El Khayat, Beirut, destroyed in the ‘Black Wednesday’ strikes. The second depicts a scene from the funeral of journalist Amal Khalil in Bisariye, South Lebanon. Amal had been covering the war in southern Lebanon when her vehicle was struck by an Israeli airstrike in the village of Tiry. She sought shelter in a nearby house, where she was struck again, and ambulances were blocked from reaching her for eight hours before she was found dead. Amal was a colleague, friend, and mentor to Fatima. The third photo shows a child's hand reaching out to touch the rain from a car window on Ghaziyeh Road, as families returned south after the first ceasefire agreement following more than 10 hours on the road.
The deadliest year for photographers, journalists and media workers was 2025, with more killed than in any other year since data began to be collected over three decades ago, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists https://cpj.org/.
The 'War Witness' series reveals what drives photographers and filmmakers to risk their lives to break the radio silence and shed light on aspects of war we don’t usually see.
Israeli authorities are still occupying Lebanese territory and carrying out attacks in breach of the ceasefire agreement. An immediate, unconditional ceasefire is needed to end the war and allow families to return safely to their communities. While those in power stay silent, we won’t. Silence serves the system. It’s speaking out that serves us all.
Bear Witness. Speak out. Break the silence.
