Life In a War Zone: Lebanon Through a Palestinian Photojournalist's Lens

Oxfam GB Podcast 1 months ago

Description

Ahmad Chihadeh is a Palestinian visual journalist, photographer, and filmmaker based in Beirut, with a focus on documentary storytelling, conflict, and human stories. In this episode of ‘War Witness’, Ahmad shows the realities of war and displacement through the photos that mean the most to him.

Ahmad presents three photographs captured in Lebanon. The first is of children playing among the rubble of a destroyed village in Houla, near the southern border, in February 2025. The second is of a family fleeing Khaldeh with their belongings loaded onto a truck in March 2026 as they left before displacement. And the third is of a woman making coffee for Ahmad in the ruins of her home in Houla. Despite losing everything, the family welcomed him with hospitality.

Israeli authorities are still occupying Lebanese territory and carrying out attacks in breach of the ceasefire agreement. An immediate, unconditional ceasefire is needed to end the war and allow families to return safely to their communities. While those in power stay silent, we won’t. Silence serves the system. It’s speaking out that serves us all.

The deadliest year for photographers, journalists and media workers was 2025, with more killed than in any other year since data began to be collected in 1992, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists. https://cpj.org/

The ‘War Witness’ series reveals what drives photographers and filmmakers to risk their lives to break the radio silence and shed light on aspects of war we don’t usually see. Bear Witness. Speak out. Break the silence. Visit: https://bit.ly/4bq3ypN
