Firas Haidar is a Beirut-based photojournalist and filmmaker whose work sits between art and journalism, focused on the scene rather than the detail. In this episode of 'War Witness', Firas documents violations committed by Israeli authorities and shares the images he can't forget.
Firas shares three photographs captured in Lebanon: The blood of a young man killed by an Israeli sniper in Houla, during what is often referred to as the "human crawl" back to the border towns; the helmet of a Civil Defence volunteer killed alongside 13 colleagues in an Israeli airstrike on their station; and Lina and Mariam, childhood friends now displaced, together in a shelter in Barja.
Israeli authorities are still occupying Lebanese territory and carrying out attacks in breach of the ceasefire agreement. An immediate, unconditional ceasefire is needed to end the war and allow families to return safely to their communities. While those in power stay silent, we won’t. Silence serves the system. It’s speaking out that serves us all.
The deadliest year for photographers, journalists and media workers was 2025, with more killed than in any other year since data began to be collected in 1992, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists. https://cpj.org/
