Description

Here's some quick videos for the rare Doujin fighters, "The Spirit Fighters XI" and "The Spirit Fighters XI II" (X-II). I acquired them in auctions some time ago but didn't record them as they were a considerable step down from "The Spirit Fighters 2000" and "The Spirit Fighters '99: 2nd Impact" functionally. While visually reminiscent of "Live-Action" (digitized) fighters like "Dong Dong Never Die", "Sono Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni vs Touhou UNIVERSE", "Zoku Sono Higurashi vs Touhou Universe" and "Meirin in Fists of Fire" but with KoF characters, they lack the polish of those and are actually stiff games with a lot of defects from the gameplay to the visuals. Created with the "Fighter Maker 2nd" engine, there is almost no difference between the two games that I've seen with the exception that "Kyo Kusanagi" is updated in XI-II with more frames of animation and a few moves have been rebalanced slightly. This video condenses short gameplay from both.

While the title screen states 2001 for both games, they seem to be a lot newer than that would suggest with support up to Windows 7 (the data files for the games are dated back between 2015 and 2016). On paper, it has fighting game staples like an evasive roll, knockdown move, EX Attacks, Special Moves and Super Moves, but the controls are fairly unresponsive and the game uses a combination of SF/KoF movements and MK movements (such as down+forward, down+back, etc.) with no margin for error, making it difficult to pull off certain moves consistently and there's a lot of delayed frames. The game uses a five button scheme with two punches and kicks (weak and strong) and a dedicated throw button. There are ten characters in both versions. The game has a Story, VS. and Team Mode. "Story" has different matches for different characters but no actual plot.

The game is wrought with collision issues, mismatched hit boxes, funky pushback on certain characters, infinite combos, "weight" (in an attempt to make things realistic for heavier characters), the movelist for characters has errors, and the game is just a curiosity of "Lost Media" as a whole rather than something that is genuinely fun to play. Visually, the game looks a little better in motion than in stills, but most of the animations are very sparse... perhaps we were spoiled by gems like Mortal Kombat and Dong Dong (Dong Dong is also on this channel, so check it out... you probably won't regret it) which have so much going for them, but at least they tried here. The soundtrack is okay and the voices are what one would expect (most seemingly ripped from their games of origin). Both games have been preserved at:

From 05:18 - 06:36 is the full title theme for the games. TSFXI-II starts at 06:38 in the video. There is also a spoof of an infinite combo at the end around the 09:36 mark. Enjoy.
