Part 1 of a multi-part, in-depth analysis and critique of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. In this video, I outline the general thesis of the project, and then go in-depth on the shooter mechanics, narrative contextualization of war in the middle east and dehumanization of middle eastern militants, and then discuss in detail how the Death From Above mission parallels the grim realities of the war on terror.
The scripts are mostly done for the rest of the series, and will be released in roughly hour-long increments. I'm anticipating a nearly 3 hour project in total, potentially longer. If anything I say leaves points of discussion unaddressed, assume that it might show up in future installments, or ask if you're curious!
I anticipate some minor backlash on this video from Call of Duty fans, so as a disclaimer: I was once a huge fan of this franchise. I still enjoy playing the early Modern Warfare games, and that includes Call of Duty 4. The purpose in this critique is to situate it in the context of a real political history that it both pulls from and has cultural influence over how many remember and conceptualize. This video focuses on Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare and its troublesome relationship to the war on terror. It will not focus on other entries in the franchise, and any argument that is made about this game is intended *only to apply to this game*.
On a similar note: yes, I'm aware of the No Russian mission in Modern Warfare 2. It isn't relevant since that's a different game. It also in no way invalidates any of my claims in this video, and in fact actually proves a lot of what I'm saying to be the case. If you would like me to discuss the No Russian Mission in a video, I'd be happy to! But that will not be addressed in this series on COD4.
