In this video I go into the element of game design that is most often overlooked in conceptualizing the meaning of games. This layer of game design, which I call "mid-level play" to distinguish it from low and high level play (baseline mechanics & major beats which approach the eventual win-state, respectively), is where a lot of the most important aspects of game design occur. I cite 3 specific examples to demonstrate 3 aspects of this "mid-level" play in the video.
