Description
Taylor's flying solo while Rhys rests his voice, with three cases: an old cotton bud buried in dry skin and wax, a mushy plug that rolls out in one piece, and a dark wax case with a surprise deeper in the canal.
Katie's patient had lost a cotton bud in the ear canal some time ago, and it had become wrapped up in dry skin and hard, dry wax. Katie works around the edges with a standard-size suction tube and a little oil, but the cotton wool fibres act like a mesh and let the suction pass straight through. It takes patience, and a set of forceps, before the blockage finally gives way.
Taylor's patient has a mushy plug and a bruised-looking area on the canal wall, after cotton bud use and oil drops. The whole plug rolls out in one piece, roughly half an inch long.
In Rhys's patient, soft dark wax clears to reveal exostosis, bony bumps deeper in the canal. Taylor explains what causes them (cold water swimming and cold, windy outdoor work are common ones) and when they start to matter.
