Are you a happy victim? Originally published in Japanese magazine Ryoko Tsushin, Happy Victims documents the homes and clothing collections of anonymous fashion fans in Tokyo before the social media age. The juxtaposition of luxury clothing with relatively modest lifestyles subverts the aspirational image brands show us in marketing, instead revealing that for most of us sacrifices must be made to fully engage with brands like Yohji Yamamoto, Margiela, and Hermes. Each image is accompanied with a short passage on the victim's life, and even includes an example of their daily schedule - frequently long working hours and limited leisure time. I find such an honest portrayal of fashion and collection refreshing, particularly VS the content we see on social media today.
