The Formation of 2 Squadron | Integrated Operational Excellence

Description

At 110 years old, 2SQN continues to display Operational Excellence. Formed in 1916, No. 2 Squadron Australian Flying Corps established a standard of operational excellence that would endure long beyond the Western Front. Under its first commanding officer, Major Oswald Watt, the squadron developed a culture of courage, professionalism, teamwork and determination—qualities that shaped its remarkable performance in the final years of the First World War. Re-equipped with the SE5a in late 1917, its air and ground crews carried those qualities into the intense air fighting and ground attack operations of 1918, adapting continuously to the demands of a rapidly changing environment.

More than a century later, those foundations remain evident in the squadron's distinguished operational record. From the battlefields of France to operations in Vietnam and Iraq, and now aboard the No. 2 Squadron E-7A Wedgetail, the unit continues to transform technology into operational effect. Its people, professionalism and fighting spirit continue to define this fine unit today.
