In this history documentary I examine one of the most incredible and strangest expeditions in the history of exploration, as in 1541 Francisco De Orellana and his small force of Spanish conquistadors began a hopeful expedition into the heart of the Amazon jungle along the mighty Amazon river that snakes through it.
What would follow were months of suffering, despair and doom as there quest to discover the lost city of gold - El Dorado - became a living nightmare, as not only their dreams were swallowed up by the infinite rainforest, but there very sanity.
What survives is an incredible, but highly disputed account of wonders and phenomena that defy belief.
Was their journey real? Or was it all just a lie created by desperate, failed men?
