For thousands of years, dungeons have been used not just to punish, but to break a prisoners very spirit. They were often intentionally designed to maximise fear and suffering.
Confined alone in the dark with no hope of release, prisoners would often be driven to insanity, the remainder their short lives spent in madness and despair.
