Unlike standardized cargo containers or liquid oil, aggregate material like sand cannot be easily stacked or pumped, presenting unique maritime stability challenges due to constant settling and shifts in weight distribution. To satisfy the immense demands of global construction, marine operators must extract sharp, angular sand grains from the offshore seabed in massive volumes rather than using smooth desert sand.
A prominent example occurred during the Port Klang deepening project, where a shallow approach channel required the removal of 20 million cubic meters of sediment to accommodate modern mega container ships. Operating around the clock, specialized dredgers filled split hopper barges that shuttled thousands of tons per load to offshore disposal sites, highlighting the critical role of these unique hulls where traditional port infrastructure does not exist.
