The structural load on a split hopper barge peaks at the exact moment the hull begins to separate while the hold is still completely filled with heavy cargo. Opening the hull doors too early or under improper wave conditions can cause localized stress to surge up to 250 megapascals, approaching the mechanical yield strength of marine grade steel and risking catastrophic material failure.
To mitigate this risk, crews utilize gravity-driven bottom dumping, where the hull halves open wide to allow the material to drop straight through the water column onto the seabed. This operation takes between 5 to 15 minutes and is strictly confined to shallow depths between 5 and 30 meters to prevent the sand from dispersing excessively during its descent.
