Description
This is the best reassessment in art this year: Monuments at MOCA and The Brick in Los Angeles.
The exhibition explores what happens to monuments after they come down, bringing together 10 decommissioned Confederate works alongside pieces by 19 contemporary artists. Among them is Kara Walker, who cocurated the show and transformed a former Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson monument from Charlottesville, Virginia, into a new work titled Unmanned Drone. Rather than offering a simple history lesson, Monuments examines how public works are preserved, confronted, and reconsidered over time.
