Description
Archival footage from early in the Syrian Civil War showing a Syrian Army T-72M struck by an RPG-22 near Damascus in June of 2014. The Syrian Civil War was an evolution of the Syrian Revolution, which began when Syrian pro-democracy groups demonstrated to express discontent with Bashar al-Asad’s Ba’athist regime. Asad’s brutal attempts to suppress the protests sparked revolution and a civil war which lasted thirteen years. Early opposition groups included the Free Syrian Army, which consisted of numerous defectors from the national army and was considered politically palatable to potential western supporters. The influence of the more secular, pro-democracy members of this faction was eventually diluted by the presence of Sunni extremists associated with Al Qaeda and the Islamic State. The Asad regime received support from Iran, Russia, and Hezbollah, and aid and air support from Russia appeared to stabilize the regime’s position until its sudden collapse in December 2024.
