The Puerta del Sol (Gate of the Sun) a spacious town square assigned to the sun, is the "Kilometer Zero" point from which all distances on the Spanish national road network are measured. The squire has been the scene of many historic events including the Spanish resistance to Napoleon in 1808 and proclamation of the Second Republic in 1931. The statue of the Bear and the Strawberry Tree standing on one side of Puerta del Sol is considered a symbol of Madrid.
