Police say multiple shots were fired into a student housing building near the University of Cincinnati campus early Saturday morning.
Investigators responded to reports of a shooting around 4:15 a.m. at the CP Cincy complex at E. McMillan Street and Highland Avenue. Officers said they found several shell casings inside the building.
No injuries have been reported, and police have not identified a suspect. It's just one of several violent incidents that have occurred near the university in the past few months.
"It makes you feel uneasy because the environment down here — I just don't know. It's definitely different from back home," UC student Victoria O. said.
Two other residents described what they saw outside the building Saturday morning:
"There was a lot of commotion going on, right? So there's people chasing people with knives. I saw a girl — she got a guy on that corner, chasing them all the way down the street," he said. "A lot of angry dudes, man; those guys had some heavy freaking artillery," one man said.
"And I just hear shots, and I duck," another man said. "And I come back; I go back in the building ... and they shot [the building]."
The shattered front door of the building has been boarded up. Glass pellets and bullet holes remain outside, but police say shell casings were found in the lobby.
This was the latest in a string of shootings near campus, starting 24 hours before classes began in August. Victoria O. and Patricia Brown grew up together in Columbus and just arrived at UC as freshmen. They were coming home from a night out and found their way blocked by police.
"I mean, it is close to home, but hopefully we can stay safe," Victoria said.
"And next year, we're going to try to actually do research on where we want to live at so we don't live in the dangerous place or stuff like that," Patricia added.
