Description

When does a fatal road rage shooting qualify for complete immunity from prosecution? Today on ARFCOM News, we team up with the legal experts at Attorneys on Retainer to break down a highly controversial Stand Your Ground ruling out of Tampa, Florida.

In November 2025, an exchange of flashing lights and profanities at an Ybor City intersection led local artist Dedrick Sykes, known as "DJ Shy Guy," to exit his Jeep and approach the vehicle of Joel Moreno Cobo. According to testimony, Sykes rapidly approached the driver's window and came within inches of the glass, hiding his hands from view. Fearing for his life and the safety of his girlfriend and 9-year-old child inside the car, Moreno Cobo fired two fatal shots.

Despite Sykes being completely unarmed and making no explicit verbal threats, Hillsborough County Circuit Judge Lyann Goudie dismissed the second-degree murder charge against Moreno Cobo. The judge ruled that the state failed to prove Moreno Cobo was not entitled to relief under Florida's Stand Your Ground statute, granting him full immunity and bypassing a jury trial entirely.
