Description
When does a homeowner's fear of a 3:00 AM burglary turn into a second-degree murder charge? Today on ARFCOM News, we team up with Attorneys on Retainer to break down a tragic incident where a viral TikTok trend collided with lethal force. On May 3rd, 18-year-old Michael Bosworth Jr. and two friends were filming a "ding-dong ditch" prank for TikTok at 3:00 a.m. in a residential neighborhood. Fearing an attempted residential burglary, 27-year-old homeowner Tyler Chase Butler called 911 and fired his weapon. Bosworth was fatally wounded, and a second teen was grazed by a bullet, while the third was unhurt. Butler has since been arrested and charged with second-degree murder and felony assault with a firearm in the commission of a felony. We audit the extreme legal dangers of engaging targets outside the home, the threshold for a "reasonable fear" of a home invasion, and how the Castle Doctrine applies when the suspected intruders are unarmed teenagers playing a prank.
