She ran straight into traffic, and the mistake behind it is one most riders make without realizing it. In this video I break down what went wrong and the riding tips that keep it from happening to you. It almost always comes back to the same fundamentals: going faster than the situation calls for, not reading the road far enough ahead, and reacting late instead of positioning early. I walk through it using the PLAN method: position for safety so you always have space and an escape, locate hazardous situations like traffic and intersections before you reach them, assess relevant threats, and navigate active threats with the three things you can always do, brake, swerve, or accelerate. I also cover why you go slower into a situation than you think you need to and add speed from there, and why progressive braking, a little more and then a little more, is what keeps you in control when something surprises you. Gear makes a mistake less severe, but skill is what prevents it.
