During the 60's and 70's in Townsville, North Queensland , Sharkey Hughes was renowned as a professional boxer. Debuting on 21 March 1969, Sharkey amassed a professional career of 28 fights (14 wins, 12 losses, and 2 draws).
He won the Queensland Flyweight title on 26 September 1970 and during his career he fought the cream of Australia's flyweights and bantamweights. Whilst he often fought in Townsville and Mackay, he also fought in Sydney where he clashed with top-quality boxers of the calibre of Brian Roberts, Steve Johnson, Sparrow Freeman, Steve Bell, and Glenn Walsh.
In conjunction with his brother, the late Lance Hughes, the boys ran the strongest boxing gym in Townsville at the time, Scorpio Lodge. Many (too many to mention) graduated from the amateur ranks to fight professionally in and around North Queensland and Sydney.
I caught up with Sharkey at the Extreme Boxing, Warana gym (proprietor Mr Kim Gray) and we discussed his boxing career (obviously), his family life, and his other passion in life, horse-racing. This is a nostalgic trip for current and former North Queensland residents and boxing tragics. Enjoy!
