This archival footage, dated 18 May 1978, courtesy Associated Press, shows Rhodesian soldiers tracking guerilla forces and sweeping for landmines amid the bush war that had been ongoing since 1964. Lessons learned by the Rhodesians against similar, and in many cases, identical enemies would go on to inform tracking and combat operations in South Africa's Border War in the 1980s. In addition to tracking tactics and techniques, the heavy use of land mines by both sides in the Rhodesian war caused their military to invent and innovate the first iterations of armored vehicles specifically designed to deflect mine blasts- the progenitors of the MRAP vehicles used around the world today.
