Replacing a Zipper in a Leather Coat

Description

First Video: today we are replacing a zipper in a leather coat.
I have opted to use a #8 metal zipper instead of the #5 which was in the coat. Why? Bigger pulls, bigger teeth (8mm instead of 5mm), easier run.

You can do this with your home sewing machine or a commercial straight stitch. I find a walking foot to have too aggressive feed dogs that might damage the finish on your leather.

Tips:
1) use poly/poly Tex 40 thread
2) smallest needle that doesn't break. I use a Titanium 16 or 18 from Ralph's sewing in Denver, Colorado. Give them a call with your sewing machine model & they will send you what you need.
3) use a 2-toe, plastic foot for even glide over the leather.
4) ALWAYS start on the inside, bottom of the jacket so if you make a mistake, it's easy to hide.
5) buy a leather jacket at a thrift store to practice on. Then make a purse or bag out of the leather.
6) I use a long stitch in the same stitching line as the old stitching. By using a long stitch, you keep from punching more holes in the leather that might make it rip.
7) I am only a text away....... visit TheZipperLady.com to ask for help
