Bethesda isn’t just a studio known for releasing ever-more underwhelming and overdull open-world RPGS, nor is it just the studio that does Skyrim for literally everything that exists. No, Bethesda back in the day made a lot of sports games - and a bunch of Terminator games.
And when making games based on The Terminator, Bethesda landed on something that would turn out to be very important indeed for the then-still-growing FPS genre. Did Bethesda’s revolution set the shooter world alight? No, not really. Other games took the ball and ran with it. But credit where credit’s due - it was Bethesda that did this one single trick doctor’s hate to shift first-person shooters onto the path they’re still on to this day.
