Today’s video is the beginning of a recovery journey for a severe ram’s horn toenail that has been growing thicker, taller, and sideways for years after trauma, pressure from shoes, and an old ingrown toenail procedure.
This client was considering having the toenail removed, but before taking that step, we worked carefully to reduce the thickness, trim what could safely be removed, clean buildup from the sides and underneath the nail, and relieve pressure that was making the toenail hit his shoes.
Ram’s horn toenails can look impossible at first, but sometimes, when the surrounding buildup is cleaned out, the nail is reduced, and the pressure is removed, the toenail has a better chance to grow in a healthier direction.
Every toenail is different, especially when the matrix has been damaged, but the goal is always to do no harm, improve comfort, and create a plan that the client can continue at home.
In this video, I also explain why thick toenails can keep getting worse when they are constantly hitting shoes, how old trauma can affect the way a toenail grows, why sidewall cleaning matters, and why consistent home care is so important between appointments.
