In episode 10 of his 12-day solo bike tour across western Montana, Darren Alff faces a modern-day challenge when all of his camera batteries die, forcing him to rely on his solar charger to keep his electronics powered. This minor setback leads Darren to reflect on how technology has revolutionized bicycle touring over the past 20+ years.
From his early adventures captured on 35mm film to videotaping on cassette tapes, Darren shares his journey through the evolution of tech, revealing how the last decade has made it easier than ever to document bike tours on video. With today’s SD cards capable of storing thousands of photos and videos, Darren marvels at how much has changed since his first bikepacking adventures.
As the day comes to an end, Darren finds a free campsite along the roadside, hanging his food in a tree to keep it safe from bears, and settling in for another night under the stars. It’s another beautiful day of solo bike touring in Montana, made even more memorable by the reflections on where it all began.
