In episode 11 of my 12-day solo bike tour across western Montana, I bring some humor to the journey by transforming into a stereotypical Montana man named Billy Bob—who hilariously tries to sell his homemade bear spray from Butte, Montana. This playful character/Trump supporter was my way of poking fun at the stereotypes I had about Montana before the trip even began.
As I discovered along the way, the people of Montana both lived up to my expectations and pleasantly surprised me. Sure, there were plenty of cigarette smokers, pick-up trucks, churches, and visible support for Donald Trump. But there was also a remarkable level of kindness, friendliness, and courtesy that completely defied the clichés.
Continuing my ride, I cycled through the small town of Superior, Montana, followed some train tracks, and even ended up pushing my fully loaded touring bike through a forest with no path at all—reminding me that bike touring isn’t always a smooth ride. Eventually, I arrived at Big Pine Campground, where I discovered the tallest pine tree in all of Montana, soaring over 200 feet into the air. It’s able to grow that tall thanks to its spot near a river in a humid valley—perfect conditions for reaching the sky.
