DIY 0–40V 0–5A Adjustable Linear Power Supply | 100% Transistor Design (No IC)
In this video, I will show you how to build a fully adjustable linear power supply with an output range from 0 to 40 volt and a current limit from 0 to 5 ampere.
This design is completely built using discrete transistors only, with no integrated circuits (no op-amp, no voltage regulator IC, no controller IC). The goal of this project is to demonstrate how a stable and functional bench power supply can be designed using only basic transistor circuits.
⚙️ Key Features:
Output voltage: 0 – 40V DC
Output current: 0 – 5A
Fully adjustable voltage and current control
Current limiting function (protects load from overcurrent)
100% discrete transistor design (no ICs)
🧰 Circuit Overview:
Full bridge rectifier using 10A diodes
Large filter capacitors for stable DC output
Current sensing using 0.1 ohm 10W shunt resistor
BD137 / BD138 control stage
TIP41 / TIP142 power transistors mounted on heatsink
Zener diode reference circuits for voltage regulation
🔥 Important Notes:
Input: around 30V AC transformer
After rectification: around 40V DC
Power stage requires a large heatsink with thermal paste
Multiple power transistors are used in parallel for heat and current distribution
🛠️ PCB & Build:
The PCB is designed for DIY builders and manufactured by JLCPCB. The boards arrived just one week after uploading the design files, with excellent build quality.
📺 Conclusion:
This project helps you understand how a classic linear power supply works using only discrete components, without relying on modern IC solutions.
