Description

According to newly released data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s Local Air Conditioning estimates, nearly 16,000 occupied homes in Alabama don’t have any form of air conditioning. That figure is especially drastic after extreme heat warnings swept the state.

Across the United States, 93% of households have some form of air conditioning, while 7% do not. Alabama ranks higher than the national rate and most of the state's households do have air conditioning: 99.2%.

Only three states had a higher percentage than Alabama: Delaware, Florida and Oklahoma, all of which saw 99.5% of households with air conditioning, per the census estimates.

The counties in Alabama with the lower rates of air conditioning are mostly clustered in the northeastern part of the state. Jackson County has the highest share of homes without air conditioning at 2.4%, or 506 households.

Shelby, Houston and Coffee counties have the highest rates of households in the state that do have air conditioning: each at 99.7%, per the data.
