NASA's X-59 research aircraft passed through Birmingham on Oct. 29.
According to NASA’s website, the X-59 is designed to fly at 55,000 feet at a speed of Mach 1.4 without producing a loud sonic boom on the ground. Instead, people will hear a thump similar to a car door closing from about 20 feet away.
