Description
The newish Mazda CX-60 Takumi is one of the most confusing cars I’ve driven lately — not because it’s bad, but because it’s genuinely good.
It’s a big 3.3-litre straight-six turbo diesel mild-hybrid with all-wheel drive, around 180 kW and 550 Nm, averaging under 6 L/100 km (and even lower on the highway with sailing mode). It costs about R1.1 million, it’s not from China, and it’s one of the last proper big-displacement diesels left in this segment in South Africa.
In this review we look at:
- Why Mazda chose to take on the Germans instead of competing with Chinese value brands
- The unique 3.3 diesel vs the 2.0 diesels in the BMW X3 and Mercedes-Benz GLC
- Real-world efficiency, power, and the 0-100 time
- How it feels on the road in Constantia
- Interior, looks, pricing (including deals on demos), and the big question: is the Mazda badge enough?
