Kulning is an ancient Nordic vocal tradition with roots in the Middle Ages, used to call livestock home from the outfields. The technique involves high-pitched, ornamented calls that were used to lead the herd back to the farm, communicate with other herders, and warn of dangers. Kulning has evolved from being a practical working tool to a recognized art form, and is now taught and performed at concerts.
