Description
Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure used to remove the gallbladder, most commonly for symptomatic gallstones, recurrent biliary colic, or cholecystitis. Under general anaesthesia, the surgeon makes several small abdominal incisions and introduces a laparoscope and fine surgical instruments. The abdomen is inflated with carbon dioxide to improve visibility. The cystic duct and cystic artery are carefully identified, clipped, and divided before the gallbladder is separated from the liver bed and removed. The operation usually causes less postoperative pain and allows faster recovery than open surgery, although conversion to an open procedure may occasionally be necessary. Potential complications include bleeding, infection, bile leakage, retained stones, and injury to the bile duct or nearby organs.
