Description
Endometriosis is a chronic condition in which tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside the uterus, commonly affecting the ovaries, fallopian tubes and pelvic lining. This can cause inflammation, scar tissue and adhesions.
Common symptoms include severe menstrual pain, chronic pelvic pain, heavy bleeding, pain during intercourse, painful bowel movements or urination, fatigue and difficulty becoming pregnant. Diagnosis may involve medical history, pelvic examination, ultrasound, MRI or laparoscopy. Treatment is individualized and may include pain medication, hormonal therapy, fertility treatment or surgery.
