Description
No way around it, the Kingston IronKey Keypad 200C is a seriously secure USB-C flash drive. Tech expert Dave Taylor goes hands-on to see whether all that security is actually easy to live with and whether the device is fast enough for daily use. The KP200C combines XTS-AES 256-bit hardware encryption with a tiny physical keypad, separate Admin and User PIN options, brute-force protection, digitally signed firmware for Bad USB protection, and FIPS 140-3 Level 3 validation. Because authentication happens entirely on the drive, there’s no software to install and it’s OS-independent, working with MacOS, Windows, Linux, ChromeOS, Android, even Googlebooks and other systems supporting USB mass storage. The rugged little drive is even IP68-rated against dust and water.
It turns out the IronKey Keypad 200C is slick and impressive, from its reassuringly substantial construction to USB 3.2 Gen 1 performance rated as high as 280MB/s read and 200MB/s write on 64GB and larger models. The one significant complaint? Setting the initial PIN proved surprisingly tricky, with the extremely abbreviated included instructions. A visit to Kingston’s website finally clarified the process. In this hands-on review and demonstration, Dave walks through setup and everyday unlocking while exploring whether the KP200C delivers enough security and convenience to justify its premium price.
