Description
Kale and collards both give beautiful green leaves to harvest in cooler weather, but there are some fascinating differences in how they grow through winter and into spring.
I sowed these collards in mid-August and planted them around 4th September. By 20th October, we've already had two big harvests, picking the larger leaves from the bottom and leaving the plants to keep regrowing.
I'm also harvesting Cavolo Nero Tuscan kale in the same way. However, I've found that collards tolerate cold a little better and continue growing through winter. They stay lower to the ground, making them easier to protect with mesh from pigeons, other pests and wind.
By February and March, kale starts moving towards flowering, producing edible shoots a little like broccoli. Meanwhile, collards continue giving harvests through April, May and even June.
