Years of Neglect: Testing My Reef Tank for the FIRST Time in Years! | Mile High Reefers
I’ve been a "slacker monkey" when it comes to maintenance lately, and it shows. In today’s reef vlog, we are facing the music. The tank is battling hair algae, Aiptasia, and a recent bout of Cyanobacteria. I’m diving deep into a massive maintenance session to get this reef back on track, and for the first time in literally years—I am finally testing my water parameters.
How bad can a tank get when you stop testing? We’re finding out today.
🔍 In This Episode:
The Cyano Cleanup: I treated the tank with Chem Clean 3 days ago. Now, it's time for the essential follow-up: a major water change and getting the GFO and Carbon back online to stop the "foam party" in the sump.
Aiptasia Attack: Using F-Aiptasia to hunt down those stubborn glass anemones.
The "Moment of Truth" Water Test: I’m using my Hanna Checkers and Salifert kits (even if the reagents are a bit expired!) to find my Calcium, Alkalinity, Phosphate, and Nitrate levels. Plus, I’m sending off a Tropic Marin ICP analysis for the ultimate deep dive.
The Results: My Alkalinity is shockingly low at 5.1 dKH. I’ll discuss why this is likely causing my Cyano issues and how I plan to dose it back to a healthy 8.5–9 range.

📈 The Game Plan:
Now that I have my numbers, it’s time for a comeback. I’ll be starting a daily dosing regimen of Alkalinity and Amino Acids to boost coral growth and coloration. I’m also looking at future equipment upgrades, including better water flow, filtration, and automated dosing pumps.
